Walmart employees get a 10% discount on regular-priced items after working there for 91 days.

But this discount has some big limits.

It does not work on gas, alcohol, tobacco, pharmacy items, or anything on sale or clearance. If you shop online, it only works on items sold by Walmart itself, not other sellers on the site.

91-Day Waiting Period

You don’t get the discount on your first day. You have to work at Walmart for 91 days first. This countdown starts on your hire date, not your first shift.

For example, if you get hired on July 1, 2026, you become eligible on October 1, 2026. It doesn’t matter if you’re full-time or part-time. Everyone gets the same 10% discount after 91 days.

To check if you’re eligible, ask your store manager, look at Walmart’s HR portal, or ask at customer service. Don’t guess. Make sure before you try to use your discount card.

★ If you work at Sam’s Club, you don’t get the 10% discount card. Instead, you get a free membership. Sam’s Club is owned by Walmart, but it has its own rules.

10% Discount Covers

The rule is simple. The discount only works on regular-priced items. That’s the main thing to remember.

Covered items include clothes, shoes, electronics, home goods, furniture, bedding, kitchen stuff, toys, sporting goods, and beauty products (not pharmacy items).

★ A surprise for a lot of people is that fresh produce and regular-priced general food items are covered by the discount, including fruits, vegetables, canned goods, snacks, and frozen food, as long as it’s not on sale.

On Walmart.com, only items sold and shipped by Walmart qualify. If a listing says “sold by” a different company, even if Walmart ships it, the discount won’t work. Clothes, electronics, and home goods usually qualify online.

Exclusions from 10% Discount Policy

✦ The discount does not work on gas, alcohol, tobacco, and pharmacy items like prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, vitamins, and supplements.

✦ It also doesn’t work on items sold by other sellers on Walmart.com.

✦ The discount does not apply to sale items or clearance prices. These are already lowered prices, so you don’t get 10% off on top of them.

✦ Rollback prices work a bit differently. A rollback is a temporary price cut that’s still part of Walmart’s normal pricing. So, the discount does apply here, just on the rollback price, not the original one. Example: something that was $100 and is now on rollback for $60 gets 10% off that $60, making it $54.

Activating Your Discount Card

After 91 days, your manager gives you a physical Walmart Associate Discount Card. But you can’t use it right away. You need to register it first.

1. After 91 days, ask your manager for your card.
2. Go online to Walmart’s HR portal and register it. You’ll need your card number, employee ID, and your Walmart.com account email.
3. If you want to shop online, link the card to your account under Payment Methods in Account Settings.
4. Try it out on your next purchase to make sure it works.

If you don’t get your card within 1 to 3 business days after hitting 91 days, contact your manager or Walmart’s HR hotline right away.

★ Your discount works through the Walmart app and website too, as long as you’re still employed. If you quit or get let go, the discount stops working right away.

Using the Card at Self-Checkout

Scan your discount card before scanning your items. The system checks your eligibility and takes 10% off automatically.

If the discount doesn’t show up on something that should qualify, the system might have the item in the wrong category. Or it might be an excluded item like fuel, alcohol, tobacco, or pharmacy stuff. Ask a cashier to check it manually or type in your employee ID if your card won’t scan.

At a regular checkout lane, just hand your card to the cashier before you pay. They’ll scan it and apply the discount for you.

Shopping online is easy.

• Log in with the email linked to your discount card
• Add items to your cart
• The discount shows up at checkout automatically, but only for items shipped by Walmart.

Before you pay, check your cart. Each item should show “Discount applied” or the lower price. If it’s not showing up, check the listing to see who’s selling it.

If it says “Sold and shipped by Walmart,” you’re good. If it says “Sold by” another company, the discount won’t apply.

Card Replacement and Rules

Your discount card is just for you. It’s not for your spouse, kids, parents, or anyone else. If someone else uses it, you could lose your job over it.

The card doesn’t expire. But if you lose it or it gets damaged, ask your store manager for a free replacement. It usually takes 1 to 3 business days. If you leave your job or get fired, your discount stops right away and the card no longer works.

If your card gets lost, stolen, or used by someone else, tell your store manager or call Walmart’s HR hotline right away. Report it to Walmart Security too.

Treat this card like a bank card. Don’t share your card number or employee ID with anyone.
