Walmart Gas Prices and Walmart+ Fuel Discount
Walmart gas prices usually run a few cents below the local average, and most Walmart pumps are actually run by Murphy USA right in the Supercenter parking lot.
Anyone can fill up at the posted price with no membership.
Walmart+ members save an extra at Walmart, Murphy, Exxon and Mobil stations, as of 2026.
Walmart Gas Prices
Here’s the part most people miss. Walmart doesn’t run most of its own gas stations.
Murphy USA does.
Murphy USA operates the pumps in the parking lots of most Walmart Supercenters, more than 1,700 of them across the country.
They’re a separate company that leases the corner of the lot, prices fuel on thin margins, and lives off the foot traffic Walmart already pulls in. That’s why the sign says Murphy, but everyone calls it “the Walmart gas station.”

The result is fuel that usually lands a few cents under the local average, sometimes as much as 10 to 15 cents. It isn’t a guarantee, though. The price is set per location and posted at the pump, so a Murphy station in one town can be the cheapest around while another sits mid-pack.
You’ll find these pumps at most Supercenters, and the full Walmart store footprint runs into the thousands.
Important
Walmart has also started running its own branded fuel stations at some newer stores, so over time more pumps will be Walmart-operated rather than Murphy.
★ One thing I’ve learned the hard way is that don’t trust the price a gas app shows you. I’ve pulled into a Murphy lot expecting a number GasBuddy quoted and found the pump reading five cents higher. The pump is the only price that counts.
Walmart Plus Fuel Discount
Walmart+ members save 10 cents a gallon at participating Exxon, Mobil, Walmart and Murphy stations, as of 2026. The catch is that the exact discount changes based on which station you’re at and which state you’re in.
| Station | Walmart+ Discount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exxon and Mobil | 10 cents/gallon | 5 cents in Alabama and Oklahoma |
| Walmart fuel stations | 5-10 cents/gallon | Depends on local law |
| Murphy USA | 5-10 cents/gallon | Pumps at most Walmart lots |
| Sam’s Club | Member fuel pricing | Requires Sam’s Club membership |
Add it all up and the discount works at more than 13,000 stations nationwide. The Exxon and Mobil half of that is the strongest piece, because both are Top Tier certified fuel, so you’re getting the detergent additive package and the savings at the same time.
Sam’s Club is the odd one out. Your Walmart+ membership doesn’t unlock the Sam’s Club pump on its own. That’s Sam’s Club member pricing, which needs a separate Sam’s Club membership. Sam’s Club is a different company from Walmart with its own rules, so don’t count it as a flat 10 cents like the others.

Use the Walmart Plus Gas Discount
The discount only works through the Walmart app. There’s no card to swipe and no code to type in by hand. Here’s the whole process.
- Make sure your Walmart+ membership is active and the Walmart app is installed on your phone.
- Turn on location services for the app so it can tell when you’re at a participating station.
- Pull into a participating Exxon, Mobil, Walmart or Murphy station.
- Open the app. At Exxon and Mobil it recognizes you automatically. At any station you can tap Services, then member prices on fuel, to launch the scanner.
- Enter your pump number and grade, or scan the QR code on the pump screen, and start fueling. The discount comes off automatically and shows on your receipt.
Must Know
One limit worth knowing at Exxon and Mobil, you can’t stack the Walmart+ discount with the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ program on the same fill, and you don’t earn Rewards+ points on a Walmart+ transaction. You pick one or the other.
Paying for Gas with a Walmart Gift Card
A Walmart gift card works cleanly at Walmart-operated fuel stations and at Sam’s Club pumps.
The gray area is Murphy USA, which runs most of the pumps at Walmart lots but operates independently, so acceptance is inconsistent and you’ll often have to pay inside at the kiosk rather than at the pump.
Since it varies station to station, it’s worth reading the full rules on using a Walmart gift card for gas before relying on one to fill up. The card also needs a PIN set before it’ll work at any pump.

Discount Apply to Diesel or Not
Diesel is worth checking separately since not every participating station treats it the same as regular gasoline.
- At most Exxon and Mobil locations, the Walmart+ discount applies to diesel just like it does to gas, since it runs off the same per-gallon pricing system.
- Murphy USA locations are more mixed, some pumps apply the discount to diesel, others don’t stock diesel at all, since not every Murphy station carries it.
If diesel matters to you, it’s worth checking the app at the pump before fueling rather than assuming it works the same everywhere. The discount showing up on your receipt is the only real confirmation.
Walmart+ Discount Doesn’t Show Up
Sometimes you fill up expecting the discount and your receipt shows full price instead. Before assuming the app is broken, check a few things first.
✦ Location services are the most common culprit. If the app can’t confirm you’re actually at the station, it won’t trigger the discount, even at Exxon and Mobil where recognition is supposed to be automatic. Toggle location permissions off and back on, then reopen the app while standing at the pump.
✦ Some stations opt out or drop off the network without much notice, so a station that worked last month might not work today. If the app doesn’t recognize the station at all, that’s usually the reason, not a glitch on your end.
Scanning the QR code manually is the more reliable fallback when automatic detection fails. It takes an extra 10 seconds, but it works even when the app’s location trigger doesn’t fire.
If you’re still charged full price after doing all of this, Walmart won’t retroactively apply the discount to a completed transaction. There’s no refund process for a missed discount, so it’s worth confirming the app shows the discounted price before you start fueling, not after.
Walmart Plus Fuel Discount Worth It
The fuel discount alone can roughly cover the membership if you drive a lot.
Do the math on the 10-cent tier: burn about 80 gallons a month, which is around 12,000 miles a year at average fuel economy, and you’d save close to 96 dollars a year. Walmart+ runs 98 dollars a year or 12.95 dollars a month, so heavy drivers nearly break even on gas by itself.
Light drivers won’t. If you fill a small tank twice a month, the gas savings might total 30 or 40 dollars a year, well short of the fee.
★ My honest take is that nobody should buy Walmart+ for the gas discount on its own unless you’re commuting serious miles. It’s a nice bonus on top of free delivery and the streaming perks, not a reason to join by itself.
If you’re weighing the whole package, the better question is either Walmart+ is worth it overall, or the gas line is just one piece of that.
