Is Kroger Cheaper Than Walmart? Price Comparison
As i have a lot of experience of shopping at both stores, many people as me which one is cheaper.
It’s closer than most people think. I priced the same cart at both stores, ran the loyalty math, and the answer surprised me a little.
Real Price Breakdown
On raw shelf price, Walmart is usually a little cheaper than Kroger on everyday store-brand basics, but the gap is small and it flips from item to item.
Once you add Kroger’s free loyalty card, digital coupons, and fuel points, Kroger often comes out ahead for shoppers who use the app. If you don’t want to clip coupons, Walmart wins.

These are typical store brand prices from mid 2026. Prices vary by region and week so your local numbers may be different. The overall pattern stays the same though. It is basically a tie with each store winning about half the items.

In a June 2026 study of 15 store brand staples, Kroger’s total came to $30.00 and Walmart’s came to $30.95. That is less than a dollar difference. On the shelf these two stores are basically equal.
Kroger Loyalty Changes the Math
Kroger’s best prices are not on the shelf tag. They show up after you scan your Kroger Plus card. Walmart’s price pages will never tell you that part.
The card is free. But if you skip it, you pay full price on almost everything. That is why Kroger looks expensive to shoppers who do not use the card.
Once you have the card, three things add up.
✦ Digital coupons. You clip these in the Kroger app, and they take money off automatically at checkout. Most coupons save you $0.50 to $2 per item. If you clip coupons before you shop, a normal trip can save you $10 to $30.
✦ Fuel points. You earn 1 point for every dollar you spend. Every 100 points takes 10 cents off each gallon of gas at Kroger fuel centers and Shell stations. On a 20-gallon fill up, that saves you a couple bucks. It adds up more if you buy gift cards there too.
✦ Weekly sales and big events. Kroger runs deals like “buy 5, save $1 each” and Friday freebies in the app. These deals often beat Walmart’s price on certain items that week.
Say a family spends about $200 a week at Kroger. The coupons and fuel points together are worth about $35 to $50 a month. That comes out to $420 to $600 a year. That is more than enough to beat Walmart’s small edge on sticker prices.
Walmart does things a different way. Their prices stay low every day and there is nothing to clip. They also have promo codes and coupons if you want to search for them, plus Walmart+ for $98 a year, which gives you delivery and a gas discount.
Warning!!
Here is a warning from my own experience. A Kroger digital coupon only works if you clip it in the app before you check out. If you forget, you pay full price and there is no way to fix it at the register. Fuel points also expire at the end of the month once you earn them.
If you know you will not keep up with clipping coupons and tracking points, do not tell yourself Kroger is the cheaper choice. For you, it is not.
Where Kroger Wins
Kroger wins on fresh categories and organic, coupons aside. Produce, meat, and bakery are consistently ranked a step above Walmart’s for quality, and the prices are competitive once a sale or coupon is on. If fresh food is most of your cart, Kroger is the better buy more often than not.
Organic is the clearest gap. Kroger’s Simple Truth organic line typically runs 10 to 20 percent below Walmart’s organic equivalents, and it’s one of the better-regarded store organic brands out there.
I switched my organic milk and eggs to Simple Truth, and it shaved a few dollars off every trip without a coupon in sight. Kroger also invests hard in pickup and delivery, with same-day slots and a Boost membership for free delivery.
Where Walmart Wins
Walmart wins on effort, selection, and one-stop shopping. Its everyday prices are low without any clipping, scanning, or app-checking, which is the whole appeal.
If you want to walk in, grab your list, and leave without doing math, Walmart is the cheaper store, because you’ll never capture Kroger’s coupon savings you didn’t clip.
Selection is the other edge. Walmart carries groceries plus pharmacy, clothes, hardware, and tires under one roof, so it replaces two or three stops. It also tends to win on bulk sizes and on a few staples outright, like the chicken breast and rice in the table above.

Kroger Store Brands and Banner Names
Kroger isn’t always called Kroger, and that trips people up. The company owns a big family of regional banners, and they all share the same Plus card, digital coupons, fuel points, and private-label brands. So this whole comparison applies if your local store says Kroger on the sign or not.
The main banners include Ralphs in Southern California, Fry’s in Arizona, and King Soopers in Colorado, plus Smith’s, Dillons, Fred Meyer, QFC, Harris Teeter, and Food 4 Less in other regions.
If you’re asking either Ralphs or Fry’s or King Soopers is cheaper than Walmart, the answer is the same, about even on the shelf, cheaper than Walmart once you use the loyalty perks. Prices between banners vary a little by market, but the program is identical.
My Suggestions
Shop Kroger if you’ll actually use the app. Clip the digital coupons, shop the weekly sales, and let fuel points build, and a Kroger-family store beats Walmart for most households, with better produce and meat on top. This is the winning move if you drive a lot and buy fresh food.
Shop Walmart if you want low prices with zero effort, you need one trip instead of two, or the nearest Walmart is simply closer. Walmart’s everyday pricing doesn’t ask anything of you, and for a lot of families that convenience is worth more than the $40-ish a month Kroger’s program could save.
Honestly, the households that save the most run both. They buy Walmart’s cheapest basics at Walmart and grab produce, meat, organic, and the couponed deals at Kroger. If both are on your regular route, that split is the cheapest cart in town.
