Walmart Car Battery Prices, Brands and Free Installation
A dead car battery early in the morning is really stressful, especially when you’re already late. You need a new one fast and you don’t want to spend too much money on it.
A car battery at Walmart runs roughly $50 to $200, and installation is free when you buy the battery there.
Walmart runs over 2,000 Auto Care Centers nationwide. You can walk in, pick a battery that fits, get it installed the same day, and hand over your old one for recycling in a single trip.
One thing to know before you drive over. The free install applies to batteries bought from Walmart itself, and the brand actually sitting on the shelf is EverStart. More on that below, because it trips people up.
What You Get When You Buy a Battery at Walmart
- Free installation, no labor fee, on batteries purchased at Walmart
- EverStart batteries across several tiers, covering most common group sizes
- Same day pickup on most in-stock batteries, and you can book the install online at Walmart.com
- A refundable core charge of $10 to $18, waived at the register if you bring your old battery in with you
Bring your own battery from somewhere else and the Auto Care Center will usually still fit it, but expect a labor charge of around $10. Walmart’s own service pages state the free install is available on Walmart purchase only.
Walmart Car Battery Brands
Walmart actually has way more battery brands than most people expect.
Battery Brands
They carry EverStart, Optima, Odyssey, ACDelco, Interstate, Dakota Lithium, Antigravity, and a few others.
Here is the part nobody explains. Most of that list lives on Walmart.com, not on the shelf. Walk into a store and what you will find is EverStart, in a few tiers, in the common group sizes.
➤ Some of those online listings are sold and shipped by Walmart, which means the free install still applies if you pick it up at a store with an Auto Care Center
➤ Others come from third party Marketplace sellers, ship to your door, and are not part of the free install offer at all
Check the seller line on the product page before you buy. If it does not say sold and shipped by Walmart, do not plan on driving to the Auto Care Center with it.
➤ EverStart is Walmart’s own brand and it’s honestly a great deal.
It’s made by Clarios, the battery manufacturer formerly known as Johnson Controls, which supplies several well known brands. So you’re basically getting the same quality battery for a lot less money.
Walmart also lists lithium-ion batteries from Antigravity and Dakota Lithium. These are lighter and last longer than regular batteries, and they start around $250. They are almost always an online order, and the Auto Care Center does not install them.
EverStart Battery Tiers
EverStart splits into a few tiers. The differences that matter are chemistry and warranty, not the badge on the case.
| Tier | Chemistry | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| EverStart Value | Flooded Lead-Acid | Older cars, mild climates, light electrical load |
| EverStart Plus | Flooded Lead-Acid | Everyday drivers wanting a little more headroom |
| EverStart Maxx | Enhanced Flooded | Most daily drivers, cold winters, higher cranking demand |
| EverStart Platinum AGM | AGM | Start-stop systems, trucks, heavy electronics |
➤ CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps, which basically tells you how well your battery starts in cold weather. It varies by group size within the same tier, so read the number on the label rather than trusting a tier average.
➤ Reserve Capacity also matters as it tells you how long your battery can keep running without the engine on, which is important if your car has a dashcam or keyless entry.
For most people, the EverStart Maxx is the best pick. It has strong CCA numbers, a 3 year warranty, and costs way less than Optima or Odyssey batteries.

EverStart Compared to Optima and Odyssey
Optima and Odyssey cost more for good reasons. Optima handles vibration really well, which makes it great for trucks and off-road vehicles. Odyssey runs high CCA ratings and deep cycle tolerance, so it suits cold climates and accessory-heavy builds.
ACDelco sits in between, and it is the one to look at if your car came with a GM battery from the factory and you want the same spec back in.
All three are usually online orders. Pricing shifts by seller and group size, so the number you see today is not the number you will see next month. Compare the CCA and reserve capacity on the listing against your owner’s manual, not against a chart.
For a regular daily car or family SUV though, the EverStart Maxx does the job just fine at a much lower price, and it is the one you can actually walk out with today.
Walmart Car Battery Prices
Walmart batteries start at around $50 and go up to $280 or more for premium options, as of July 2026.
Treat those as ranges, not price tags. The same EverStart tier can swing $40 or more between group sizes, and stores price independently. The fitment tool on Walmart.com will show you the real price for your car in about thirty seconds, which beats any chart on any website including this one.
- $50–$100 is good for older cars or vehicles that don’t need much power
- $100–$150 is great for everyday cars in normal climates
- $150–$200 is best for trucks, SUVs, or cars with heavy electrical setups
At checkout, most states add a core charge of $10–$18. You can skip that by bringing your old battery to the register.
Best Walmart Car Batteries under $100
The EverStart Value and EverStart Plus both works fine for older cars in mild climates. But if you live somewhere with cold winters, spending an extra $30–$50 on the EverStart Maxx is the better move.
AGM Batteries at Walmart
➤ If your car came with an AGM battery or has start-stop technology, you need to replace it with another AGM. A flooded battery in a start-stop car cannot handle the constant cycling. It will fail early, often inside a year, and your start-stop system may quietly stop working before it does.
The EverStart Platinum AGM is the right pick for these cars. It works well with start-stop systems and handles the electrical demands of modern trucks and luxury cars.
The reverse is also true and it costs people money. If your car did not come with AGM, buying one anyway does not buy you much. That is an extra fifty to eighty dollars for capability your alternator was never tuned to use.
Find the Right Battery Group Size
Battery group size is the most important thing to get right. It’s a code like 35, H6, or 51R that tells you the battery’s size and terminal placement. If you get the wrong one, it simply won’t fit.
Walmart’s website has a fitment tool that makes this easy
✦ Go to the Walmart Batteries page and find the “Find auto parts that fit” widget
✦ Select your vehicle type
✦ Enter vehicle details like Year, Make, Model, and Engine
✦ The tool will show only batteries that fit your car, with the current price
✦ Double check the group size against your owner’s manual or the label on your old battery
Walmart covers most group sizes including 24F, 35, 48, H6, H7, and many more, which works for most American and Japanese cars.
If you drive a European car with an unusual group size, call your local store first to check if they have it in stock.

Walmart Battery Installation
You can book an appointment at Walmart.com or just walk in. Walk-ins are fine but appointments are better during busy morning hours. Hours differ by store, and the Walmart Auto Care Center guide covers what each location offers.
Not every Walmart has an Auto Care Center. Use the store locator on Walmart.com and filter for Auto Care Center services before making the trip.
Things included in the installation are:
- Battery removal
- Terminal cleaning
- New battery installation
- Basic electrical test
The whole thing usually takes under 30 minutes.

Walmart May Decline the Install
Walmart technicians may not install your battery if:
➤ The battery is under the seat, in the trunk, or behind interior panels
➤ Your car needs battery coding after replacement (common in BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche)
➤ The battery came from a third party Marketplace seller rather than Walmart
Motorcycle, marine, and deep cycle batteries are sold at Walmart but are not installed by the Auto Care Center.
Call ahead if your car is anything other than a common sedan, SUV, or pickup. The bay makes the call on the spot, and a wasted trip on a dead battery is a bad morning.
Walmart Battery Core Charge and Recycling Policy
When you buy a new battery at Walmart, most states add a core charge of $10–$18 at checkout. This is basically a deposit to make sure old batteries get recycled properly.
It works like this:
➤ Bring your old battery when you buy the new one and the core charge is waived
➤ Don’t bring it and you pay the deposit upfront, then get a full refund when you return the old battery later
Either way you don’t lose the money.
For unused batteries, Walmart accepts returns within 90 days with a receipt, in line with the standard Walmart return policy. The battery has to be unused and in original packaging. If an installed battery stops working, that goes through the warranty process, not returns.
Walmart Car Battery Warranty
EverStart warranties depend on which battery you buy
Battery Type
- EverStart Value
- EverStart Plus
- EverStart Maxx
- EverStart Platinum AGM
Warranty
- 1-year free replacement
- 2-year free replacement
- 3-year free replacement
- 3-year free replacement plus prorated credit after that
Warranty terms get revised, so check the label on the battery itself before you count on a number. The free replacement window is printed right on the case.
To make a claim, just bring your battery and receipt to any Walmart Auto Care Center. A technician will test it on the spot and replace it for free if it fails. No mailing anything in, no waiting. It does not have to be the store you bought it from, which is more than most Walmart warranty claims allow.
Things the warranty does not cover includes:
✦ Physical damage
✦ Wrong installation
✦ Using the battery in the wrong vehicle
✦ Damage from a bad alternator or charging system
✦ Labor to remove and refit the battery, even if Walmart installed it
If your alternator is overcharging, it can kill the battery and that won’t be covered. Get your alternator tested before assuming the battery is the problem.
Walmart Plus Auto Care Benefits
A Walmart+ membership does not get you a discount on batteries or battery installation. I want to say that plainly, because a lot of pages imply otherwise.
What the Walmart+ Auto Care benefit actually covers is tires.
➤ Free flat tire repair at Walmart Auto Care Centers
➤ Free road hazard warranty when you buy tires with the Value installation package, which saves about $10 per tire
The road hazard benefit is not available in New York. Walmart stopped offering it there after February 28, 2025, because of a state law change.
The 10 cents per gallon fuel discount is real too, but it applies at Walmart, Exxon, Mobil, and Murphy fuel stations. It has nothing to do with the Auto Care Center.
So if you are already a member and you are buying tires at Walmart, use the benefit. If you are only replacing a battery, the membership changes nothing about your bill.
